Cognition and Student Learning Grant

The Institute of Educational Sciences offers the Cognition and Student Learning (Cognition) grant that supports research that applies recent advances in cognitive science to education practice. The long-term outcome of this research will be an array of tools and strategies (e.g., instructional approaches, computer tutors) that are based on principles of learning and information processing gained from cognitive science and that have been documented to be efficacious for improving learning in education delivery settings from prekindergarten through high school and for vocational or adult basic education or developmental (remedial)/bridge programs for under-prepared college students.

Award period: 2 to 5 years

Summer Research Opportunities for Undergraduates at NIST

“The SURF program encourages the pursuit of graduate degrees in science and engineering by exposing undergraduate students to cutting-edge research and providing them the opportunity to work with internationally known NIST scientists. Applications are submitted on behalf of qualified students by their schools. Colleges and universities in the United States and its territories with degree-granting programs in nanoscale science, engineering, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, biology, materials science, neutron research, and/or physics are eligible to nominate students.”

Collaboration Grants for Mathematicians

The Simons Foundation’s Division for Mathematics and the Physical Sciences invites applications for grants to mathematicians primarily for collaboration and travel. The goal of the program is to support the “mathematical marketplace” by substantially increasing collaborative contacts in the community of mathematicians working in the United States. The foundation will make a large number of grants to accomplished, active researchers who do not otherwise have access to substantial research funding that supports travel and visitors.

Award: $7,000 per year for five years

The State Farm Youth Advisory Board grants funds for student-led service-learning projects in the United States and in the Alberta, New Brunswick and Ontario provinces of Canada. These grants address, in a structural way, the issues of:

NEA "Our Town" Grant

The National Endowment for the Arts works to improve the lives of America's citizens in many ways. Communities across our nation are leveraging the arts and engaging design to make their communities more livable with enhanced quality of life, increased creative activity, a distinct sense of place, and vibrant local economies that together capitalize on their existing assets. 

Through Our Town, subject to the availability of funding, the National Endowment for the Arts will provide a limited number of grants, ranging from $25,000 to $200,000, for creative placemaking projects that contribute toward the livability of communities and help transform them into lively, beautiful, and sustainable places with the arts at their core. Our Town will invest in creative and innovative projects in which communities, together with their arts and design organizations and artists, seek to:

• Improve their quality of life.
• Encourage greater creative activity.
• Foster stronger community identity and a sense of place.
• Revitalize economic development.

Texas Sea Grant

The Texas Sea Grant College Program is inviting pre-proposals for the next two-year grant cycle (February 1, 2014-January 31, 2016). We are seeking to fund original and innovative research that has public relevance and is aligned with one or more of our four focus areas:

3.         Resilient Communities and Economies

4.         Environmental Literacy and Workforce Development

This includes, but is not limited to, the following fields: physical sciences, natural sciences, geosciences, engineering, math, health sciences, veterinary sciences, social, behavioral and economic sciences, agricultural sciences, archeology, planning, law, policy, communications, education and business.  

We are especially interested in receiving pre-proposals to support multi-disciplinary research, beginning investigators, underrepresented investigators, proposals that involve undergraduate and graduate students in research and collaborations between institutions of higher education and industry.

NSF's Interdisciplinary Behavioral and Social Science Research

The Interdisciplinary Behavioral and Social Science Research (IBSS) competition of the National Science Foundation promotes the conduct of interdisciplinary research by teams of investigators in the social and behavioral sciences. Emphasis is placed on support for research that involves researchers from multiple disciplinary fields, that integrates scientific theoretical approaches and methodologies from multiple disciplinary fields, and that is likely to yield generalizable insights and information that will advance basic knowledge and capabilities across multiple disciplinary fields.
